The Beginning of Sankalpa

Sankalpa began as a desire to give back to our homeland and help those in need, which was born at an informal gathering during the Ganesh Utsav Celebration in September 2000 at The Ohio State University. we discussed ways to give back to India and came to the realization that as the "crème de la crème" of India [😉] , it was our moral responsibility to contribute to the betterment of our society. We were eager to break from the mundane circle of assignments, mid-term exams, and projects. I [Vinayak] suggested we begin our own special group, dedicated to giving back to our communities in India. Met with a great deal of enthusiasm, we decided to name it Sankalpa - Our Resolution. That same day, we had 40 interested members. We planned to meet over the weekend to see where it went.

The beginning of Sankalpa was marked! We, a spirited group of individuals, came together to brainstorm ideas for developmental projects and discuss social and developmental issues in India. Initially, meetings were held every fortnight and attendance was high. However, over time, attendance dwindled and only a few members remained committed to the cause -- Mukta, Sandip, Ajay, Neeraj, and myself [Vinayak]. Despite this, these individuals remained optimistic and determined to make a difference. After a few months, the group solidified their vision for the organization, focusing on micro-developmental and sustainable projects in the areas of sanitation, health, education, and agriculture. They believed that addressing these issues was crucial for the development of India.

Sankalpa's First Fundraiser

Our first fundraising event was fondly called "Chaat for Charity," where we sold bhelpuri at a campus festival and made a good profit. This event helped us gain momentum and a feeling of accomplishment through teamwork. On January 26th, 2001, India was hit with a devastating earthquake in Bhuj, Gujarat. Sankalpa joined forces with other organizations such as Federation of Indian Associations [FIA], Association for India’s Development [AID], and Children’s Relief and You [CRY] to raise money for the Gujarat Earthquake Relief Fund. This was our first official fundraising campaign as an organization.

Revitalizing Sankalpa

With the low attendance at meetings, Sankalpa started to take a backseat for ~ one year. We got busy with the usual graduate student life. I was feeling really discouraged that we had lost some of our excitement for the project. Was it was tough to keep people motivated when it wasn't a paid gig? But, little did I know that the ❤️‍🔥fire❤️‍🔥 in some of us was still burning bright. In March 2002, a conversation during a road trip with Mukta, Ameya, and Swapna reignited the group's passion, leading to the rebirth of the organization. Sandip was thrilled to join in the renewed efforts when contacted by the group upon their return to Columbus.

The 2003 New Year marked the beginning of a new chapter for Sankalpa as we broaden our partnerships with other organizations, not just NGOs. We worked with Prabuddha Bharat towards their goal of promoting holistic education in India through the support of village libraries and youth development projects.

Contemporary Sankalpa

Sankalpa is not just a group, it's a movement. All it takes is the motivation and commitment from each and every one of us to spread Sankalpas to every corner of the world. When we take action and make a resolution to make a difference, we can bring about a developmental revolution in India. Sankalpa is just the beginning - our humble step towards a bigger goal. We hope that our actions will inspire others with a similar vision to join us in this common cause, and make a real impact.
